Surprising Uses for Your Dishwasher

June 30, 2011

You gotta check this out! Twenty-two things…other than dishes…that you CAN put in the dishwasher to clean and disinfect…

Pssst…clinical studies have shown that a dishwasher is “a suitable means of disinfecting medical instruments,” which means it’s probably pretty good with a lot of your stuff too!

  • baseball caps
  • action figures and other small toys
  • rain boots
  • flip flops
  • tools with metal or plastic handles
  • ceramic cabinet knobs (dressers and drawers too)
  • hairbrushes
  • fan grilles, switch plates, and vent covers
  • shin guards, knee pads, and mouth guards
  • garden tools
  • light-fixture covers
  • potatoes

And thirteen things you might but probably shouldn’t put in there…

  • cast-iron, enameled cast-iron, and copper pots and pans
  • formal dishes and nice flatware
  • crystal glasses
  • wooden spoons
  • brass items
  • good kitchen knives and steak knives
  • wooden cutting boards
  • insulated mugs and containers

And some weird ones too…

  • computer keyboard
  • broom ends (and dust pans, scrub brushes, and vacuum attachments)
  • salmon…WHAT!?
